Kunisada (Toyokuni III) Triptych
Kunisada is one of the renowned woodblock (hanga) printmakers of the 19th century. He was a member of the Utagawa school and around 1844-5 took on the Toyokuni name of the former master of the school. These prints date to around that period when he was using both names. The signature on the middle print is 'Toyokuni's retainer Kunisada'. This triptych is from a series of 'Scenes throughout the year' and this scene is 'Hazuki' (August). The detail is very fine and the colours have the sophistication and subtlety that was typical of the Edo period before the introduction of much brighter inks in the late 19th century. Each print is approximately 25.5cm x 37cm and apart from a little wear on the borders are in excellent condition.
