Antique Striped Boro Futonji
Antique indigo cotton striped boro futon cover (futonji). It dates from late 19th - early 20th century. It is made up of four panels and measures 125cm x 183cm. Apart from the obvious patches it's in good, sturdy condition. Indigo is often difficult to photograph - the colour is truest in the close up photos.
In recent years boro has become associated with visible mending, but the interesting stitching and patching on authentic boro pieces like this were on the inside of the futon cover and weren't meant to be seen. Futonji usually come to me opened out as a flat panel and so possibly often had a second life as a general purpose household cloth or wrapping cloth.
A wonderful piece for collectors and lovers of authentic boro.
