Taisho Roman Moga Trinket Box
This small silk covered cardboard trinket box is a charming example of the Art Deco inspired Taisho Roman (Taisho era, 1912- 1926 Romanticism) aesthetic. It measures approx 10.5 x 6 x 3 cm and is in surprisingly good condition for its age - there is some discolouration on the inside of the lid and on the paper flowers, very tiny holes in the silk, and small marks on the face. The lid isn't fitted and sits loosely on the box.
For many in the rapidly growing middle-class in Japan the 1920's and early 30's was a brief period of liberalism before the militarism of the late 30's. Moga ('modern girls') like the young lady on this box were inspired by European Art Deco and flapper fashions. This is a rare delight! Dates from 1920s/early 30's
