Indigo Cotton Tsunobukuro 'Horn Bag'

This is a traditional style of  bag  usually  made from a single length of folded and stitched fabric.  This one has been made  with joined pieces of  old  kasuri striped  old cotton  kimono fabric that has  also been patched   with remnants of the same fabric  at the time of making.  The bag is constructed so the patches are on the inside.  So the stitching is more uniform than a typical piece of boro that has been patched with  other fabrics at different times.  The stitching is all functional but has a wonderful slightly random decorative quality. 

The triangular 'horns' that give this type of bag its name can be tied like a furoshiki to create a handle.  This one also has  a tie attached  that can be used instead.    These types of bags were often used for storing and carrying grain  and other goods.  Because the material is on the bias it has quite a bit of stretch. This is in very  good condition with  one small hole and a few small marks. It measures 65cm x 128 cm.  Early - mid 20th century.
